Monastiraki: Where yesterday meets today

At the foot of the Acropolis lies one of Athens' oldest neighborhoods, a place where ancient landmarks, bustling markets and modern city life coexist side by side. Office workers and local residents weave through Monastiraki’s crowds of tourists, fueled by the area’s many cafés, restaurants and other independent businesses that line its streets.

Wolt courier partner Evangelia Nassi describes the atmosphere as “magical”.

“It combines yesterday with today,” she says. "You see tourists walking around carefree and enjoying their holidays. You see the pace of the locals, who are faster and more demanding. It's a combination of many things."

Her favorite part is Monastiraki Square and its famous flea market, which evokes powerful childhood memories, still vivid today.

Today, those same streets form part of her regular courier route, during which she delivers everything from coffees and takeaway food to groceries, flowers and pharmacy orders.

The pulse of Athens

For Alexis Pitsilis, co-founder of Kapsa by Chef Christoforos Peskias, there was never any doubt where the restaurant should be when the idea for a modern twist on a Greek favorite came to them two years ago.

Located on Skouleniou Street, the busy souvlaki spot sits meters from the unassuming but beautiful 11th-century Church of Saints Theodores, recently restored through an extensive conservation project.

"Monastiraki is in the heart of Athens," he says. "It has the pulse of Athens."

Kapsa is one of hundreds of venues operating on Wolt across the neighborhood. In the 12 months to July, more than 1 million orders were placed through the platform, including 80,000 grilled meat and wraps, invariably washed down with a coffee. Some 50,000 of them in fact. 

The rhythm of the neighborhood is reflected in the data too - around one-third of orders are placed on Thursday and Friday, with lunchtime the busiest.

Wolt's role also extends beyond restaurants here, with residents and workers using the platform for a wider range of groceries and retail items. More than 1,500 flower bouquets were delivered in the same period, as well as 5,000+ cat food meals - hardly surprising in a neighborhood where a feline friend pops up on almost every street corner. 

Much of this activity stays close to home, with almost two-thirds of orders from Monastiraki venues delivered within 2 km. Within 3 km, that figure rises to 85%.

This growing awareness of Wolt as a place to shop for everyday essentials and bigger grocery orders, as well as meals, is something Evangelia has noticed as she criss-crosses the neighborhood. 

"You help an elderly woman by bringing things from the supermarket or pharmacy," she says. "That 'thank you, my dear, have a good day' she says at the end is the best reward."

A new way to discover Monastiraki

For customers like Kassiani Sotirakou Mantouvalou, an economics student who likes socializing in Monastiraki, Wolt has become another way to explore and experience the neighborhood.

She uses the app for its convenience, but also to discover new places she might not otherwise have found.

Whether it’s locals running day-to-day errands, tourists finding somewhere exciting for lunch or families still seeking treasure hidden among the flea market stalls, Monastiraki continues to bring yesterday and today together – and, more importantly, people, too.
